Description: Teen prodigy Yagira accepts Cannes award in Tokyo
Yuya Yagira, the 14-year-old boy who won the Best Actor award at the Cannes film festival, joked with the crowd despite looking nervous when Hirokazu Koreeda, director of the movie, "Nobody knows," handed him the trophy at a Tokyo hotel on Wednesday. "I have received a trophy for the first time in my life," Yagira said. "I want to become a great actor." After a reporter asked Yagira where he planned to put the Cannes trophy, the actor made the audience laugh when he replied, "Can I actually take it home?" Yagira, a third-year junior high school student in Tokyo, is the first Japanese person to receive the Best Actor award at the prestigious French film festival and the youngest person ever to do so. He didn't attend the presentation ceremony last weekend because of school examinations. Director Koreeda received the trophy instead of the boy. (Mainichi Shimbun, Japan, May 26, 2004) |
